Railway operators ensure the smooth and safe running of the railway engines. Railway operator roles include:

Train dispatcher (US) = rail traffic controller (Canada) = train controller (Australia) = train service controller (Singapore) = signaller (UK) = employed by a railroad to direct and facilitate the movement of trains over an assigned territory, which is usually part, or all, of a railroad operating division. The dispatcher is also responsible for cost effective movement of trains and other on-track railroad equipment to optimize physical (trains) and human resource (crews) assets. Freight conductor = the lead employee assigned to a freight train, and is responsible for the smooth operation of the assignment, which includes reviewing schedules and maintaining communication with the train's crew members Dispatcher = a communications worker who receives and transmits information to coordinate operations of other personnel and vehicles carrying out a service Signal operator = Signalman = an employee of a railway transport network who operates the points and signals from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains Railway operators will regularly review train schedules and carefully plan train timetables to avoid delays and ensure safe transportation of both passengers and freight. Railway operators must have excellent communications skills. An important part of a railway operators’ role is relaying information to other railway operators at locations across the country. Railway operators work within a geographically large area and will require a good understanding of geography and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
