Railway Industry Occupations | Station

Railway station workers work either on the platform or in the railway station office. It's a good mix of indoor and outdoor work and wearing a uniform is usually required. Some railway station responsibilities include:


• Checking and selling tickets

• Ensuring that passengers get on and off the train safely

• Loading and unloading luggage or cargo

• Updating software systems for electronic message displays

• Making passenger announcements

• Operating CCTV cameras

• Providing information for customers on train times, delays, routes, and services


The jobs are:

Station agent = Stationmaster = the person in charge of a railway station, responsible for the management of other station employees and holds responsibility for safety and the efficient running of the station

Senior Station Superintendent = the person in charge of railway station staff

Station Superintendent = the person who is responsible for overseeing and managing on-site construction activities related to the construction of stations

Deputy Station Superintendent = the manager who assists other committee members and the Station Manager with their roles

Pointsman (British Isles) = Switchman (North America) = yardman (Commonwealth) = a rail transport worker whose original job is to operate various railway switches or points on a railroad

Porter = attendant, steward (British Isles) = a railway employee who assists passengers at railway stations, and handles the loading, unloading, and distribution of luggage and parcels
