Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic are the three main rock types, distinguished by their formation: igneous rocks form from cooled magma/lava, sedimentary from compacted(=pressed together) fragments (sediments) or organic matter, and metamorphic from existing rocks transformed by heat and pressure.
