Respiratory Equipment
SCBA = self-contained breathing apparatus = a respirator worn to provide an autonomous supply of air in an toxic atmosphere from a gas cylinder
voice amplifier = device attached to an SCBA that makes a person's voice louder
harness = a set of straps which fit under a person's arms and fasten round their body in order to keep a piece of equipment fixed
oxygen-deficient = containing low levels of oxygen
positive pressure = a system within an SCBA that provides a constant stream of oxygen
fume = a gas that is emitted from something and usually refers to smth toxic
lock-and-release device = a mechanism which allows to take on/put off garment fast
PASS = Personal Alert Safety System = a device that alerts others in the area loudly that the firefighter is in danger
point of no return = the stage at which it is no longer possible to stop what you are doing and its effects cannot be avoided or prevented
