The Earth Layers
Core It is the hottest part of the Earth. Temperatures are greater than 4,000°C. This part is made up of iron and nickel. Mantle It moves about as fast as fingernails grow. It travels in currents, called convection currents. The rock here is so hot (up to 4,000°C) that it is in a plastic state. This jelly-like rock is called magma. Crust It can be as thin as 3 km under the oceans. It may be 70 km in thickness under the continents. The outer part of this layer consists of solid rock, mostly basalt and granite.
