 MV (or MS) = motor ship (or motor vessel) 

deck = the top outside floor of a ship or boat 

engine room = the part of a ship where the engines are 

galley = kitchen in a ship or plane 

laundry = a room where you can wash your clothes or sheets 

storeroom = a room used for keeping things 

hospital = a place where a person can be treated 

ratings' mess room = where just mariners meet to socialize 

officers' mess room = where chiefs meet to socialize 

cabin = a small room in which you live or sleep 

radio room = where radio-communication operations are conducted 

bridge = the part of a ship where the captain and other officers stand to control the ship 


Pilot = a person with special knowledge of guiding a ship through a difficult area of water (e.g.the entrance to a harbour) 

Chief Officer = the captain's mate responsible for the loading and stowage of cargo 

Chief Engineer = the senior one of an engine department on a merchant ship 

Master = the captain of a ship that transports goods
